First Time User Registration for Interlibrary Loan

Service Guidelines

This form is intended only for use by non-Harvard affiliates. Harvard ID holders log in here.

All first time users of this system must register.

  • Entering your personal information upon registration means you will not have to supply the information again when making future requests.
  • By specifying a Username and Password of your choosing, you will have secure access to information about your requests. You will also be able to review the list of items you have requested in the past.

About your Username and Password

During registration, you will be asked to choose a Username and Password. You will use this Username and Password when logging on to the ILL system in the future.

Username
If you are a participating OCLC library, please use your OCLC symbol as your username.
Otherwise, please provide a username that references your institution.
Password
Choose anything you like. We recommend that you follow good security practice and choose a password that is different from those you use to access other systems. Your password will be encrypted, so it will remain secure. Only you will know your password.

Eligibility

This service is for institutions such as libraries, universities, and law firms; it is not for Harvard affiliates. If you have a valid Harvard ID, please register through the Harvard Library Portal.
If you are an MMS affiliate, please contact Josh Rosenfeld at jrosenfeld@mms.org to request scans or loans from Harvard Resource Sharing.

When you have completed your registration you will receive an email with details about your account and can begin ordering immediately.

Ordering Instructions

Log into ILLiad. On the main menu select the type of request you need. Fill in a complete citation and submit your request. Inclusion of full citations (non-abbreviated journal title, author, page numbers) and ISSN or Pubmed ID numbers speeds request time. You can check on the status of your request by looking under the "view/modify outstanding requests" menu selection.

Receiving Materials

Articles are sent to the email address you submit upon registration and can be downloaded from the "view/download electronically delivered articles" menu selection. Scans of articles and book chapters are obtained from both Harvard and non-Harvard libraries. Loans will be delivered to the Countway Library. It can take up to 14 business days to obtain a loan.

Important Copyright Information

WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
